Chris had been working in theatre; looking after shows for everyone from big-name household stars, through to tomorrow’s new starlets. Even though it was a job he loved doing, eventually the demands of home life meant he had to stop doing all the long distance travel and time away from family. Whilst searching for something which would be a fulfilling alternative career, a domestic property crisis provided the answer:

“We had the misfortune of having our house get completely flooded”, says Chris, “and in the process of getting the damage sorted out with our insurers I realised that there was a real lack of skilled and qualified tradesmen in our area. It was a bit of a light-bulb moment!

As I already had a modest technical background, I decided that an obvious thing to do would be to re-train to be able to work locally as a domestic electrician. So I looked around for courses on the internet and quickly found myself talking to Trade Qualified about their electrician training course. I was a little sceptical at first and asked loads of questions, but the team talked me through everything involved and inspired me with the confidence to sign up.”

Chris decided that there was no time to be lost, and set about training as an electrician as quickly as possible whilst still being able to balance the hands-on time and home study with other commitments; “When I asked Trade Qualified what the shortest time was that they had seen a student complete their electrician training, they said about three months. I wanted to try to fit it all in as quickly as possible, so I asked them about trying to do it all over one summer. They said they were willing to be flexible for me and make the arrangements with their training centre to do that, so long as I put in all the hours of home theory study to go with it.”

With all of the home study material they provided including quality text books and access to tutors on-line, Chris was relieved that whilst the learning curve was really steep he felt completely supported and encouraged by everyone. “All the tutors and training centre support staff were amazing. Helpful, friendly and really knowledgeable about real-world stuff and not just the theory. Everyone went out of their way at the training centre to help me accomplish my goal, and my personal target of completing in a short time of six weeks. I was very impressed by the content of the electrician training – not only did it cover all the technical areas it even included lessons on how to cost up jobs and what you need to know about being self employed”.

After completing all the electrician training and passing his exams, Chris said he felt totally confident about finding work in his new career. “It was an amazing experience, and totally life changing for the better.

I've got my own electrical contracting business and I’m now working in a job where I get to meet loads of different people in different places and have my own customers; there is nothing quite as satisfying as being personally recommended to people. I’ve gained the flexibility I needed and even managed to increase my income without increasing my hours!”
