![]() Katie was working as a Nurse in a Bradford hospital. It was the career she had always wanted but now that she was actually doing it she realised that it was not for her. She needed something more creative and challenging. Quite by accident she found what she wanted. She was discussing her job with one of her friend's brothers who just happened to be an Electrician. He described to her a life of different sites, doing different jobs and meeting different people all over the country. Katie was excited by what he described but although she had no problems working with men, she was concerned about being a woman in a man's world. He told her there was nothing to worry about; more and more women were coming into the trades these days and it was quite normal to see women working on building sites. This was just what she wanted to hear! Katie asked not just her Electrician friend but his friends too what qualifications she needed to set her up in a new career. Katie also did a lot of research on the internet; particularly on the City and Guilds website. When she was absolutely certain about what she needed, she then set about the task of finding a training company where she could get qualified without having to lose her current income. ‘As well as the internet, there were lots of companies who offered electrician training and electrical training in my local newspapers' said Katie. ‘I chose Trade Qualified for my electrician training because their course was really flexible and they provided a lot of expensive course books and a toolkit. These were all included in the course fee'. When I got my learning pack I was really impressed. It was all very nicely presented and I could see how easy it was going to be to get through the course. Everything was explained at the beginning of each chapter and it was laid out in a way that was simple to understand. Then came the time when I would have to go into the training Centre for my first week of practical work! I was really nervous but when I eventually got there, I loved it straight away. The tutors were kind and helpful and I really felt that they wanted me to do well. They were not just nice but exceptionally nice and they went out of their way to give me sensible practical advice about being an Electrician in the ‘Real World'. I liked and respected all of them because they made all my workshop time relaxing and enjoyable and this helped me to learn far more easily. Katie now works as a self-employed electrician on different sites. Her new career is everything she always wanted it to be. She enjoyed her nursing days but now she looks forward to her job and the daily challenges. ‘I am really happy' said Katie. ‘Financially, I can now look to the future with a lot more confidence. Would I do it all again? ‘Definitely', said Katie ‘and I would recommend Trade Qualified and their Electrician course to anyone. Anyone can do it, you just need to want to.' |
