NVQ Level 2 C&G 6189 Diploma in Plumbing and Heating
This qualification is at the heart of the PPC4 course and is now the accepted industry standard and the basis of knowledge for all modern domestic plumbing.
Please note that there is also a C&G 6189 NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Installing and Maintaining Domestic Heating Systems. The two qualifications are very different and should not be confused with each other. The Diploma in Installing and Maintaining Domestic Heating Systems qualification is intended for people who want to become Domestic Heating Engineers – not plumbers!
The intention of the City & Guilds professional body is that the NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Plumbing and Heating is the appropriate qualification for people who want to become plumbers and Domestic Heating Engineers.
Water Supply Regulations 1999
It is illegal to touch the UK water supply without this qualification. As a plumber you could not really work without it! When this qualification is achieved you are able to register with your local Water Authority as an approved contractor.
Hot Water Systems and Safety (Replaces Unvented Hot Water Storage Systems)
There was a time when most hot water systems had a storage tank in the loft that fed water to yet another storage tank in the airing cupboard. The water was then heated either by an electric immersion heater or indirectly by the boiler. With the advent of modern building techniques that maximise living space coupled with the drive towards energy-efficiency the Unvented Hot Water Storage System was developed. With this modern system you no longer need a tank in your loft and you can heat your water as and when you need it simply by turning on the tap.
This sealed and pressurised system is now installed in almost all new-build properties and therefore is an increasingly more important part of a plumber’s day-to-day work. When you gain this qualification you will no longer need to contact your local Buildings Control Officer to have your work approved, saving you time and costs. You will be recognised as being competent and be able to self-certify your work.
Domestic Electrical Installer Defined Scope Part P Certificate
With the strict regulations now in force, this electrical qualification is simply a must for professionals. With Part P Defined Scope you will be able to certify not just your own work but anyone else’s work that was personally supervised by you during its installation. Naturally, you must be satisfied that the work meets the required standard. This includes work in kitchens, bathrooms, swimming pools, hot air saunas, electric floor or ceiling heating systems, garden lighting or power installations, non pre-assembled extra low-voltage lighting installations and many other areas. Whilst on your course everything will be clearly explained to you together with your obligations to register if you intend to be self-employed.

Solar Energy Powered Domestic Hot Water Systems
In June 2008 The government unveiled plans to meet EU imposed targets to deliver 15% of the UK’s energy from renewable sources by the year 2020. Renewable Energy has become an extremely important part of government objectives and in consideration of the targets we have accepted from the EU, it is likely that this sector will continue to grow for the foreseeable future.
This qualification will enable you to get a head start in an area that will inevitably provide additional work opportunities over the coming years.
CSCS Site Safety Card Appointed Persons First Aid Certificate
These go together and will enable you to work legally on building sites across the UK subject to wearing the required Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and observing site safety rules. For plumbers who aspire to working on a domestic house building site, they are a must have. When you are ready to work on a commercial site or on many local authority sites you will need to complete a form which needs to be signed by the site manager and sent with a small fee to obtain your CSCS card.
Gas Safe Registration – ACS accreditations
This needs little explanation. As a registered gas engineer you will be able to undertake a wide range of gas related installation and maintenance work and display the Gas Safe logo on your vehicles and stationery. The financial and marketing benefits to you are therefore obvious. |
